Little known facts about disabilities or with people with a disability 

Did you know? 

General 

  • Not all people with the same disability, know each other.
  • Hi, I once knew a person who was ..... Is the opening line to most conversions.
  • Disabilities are not contagious, at worst they be the side effect of something that was.
  • Odds are, the person knows they have a disability. You don't have to whisper.
  • If someone wants their food cut, they will ask.
Blind/visually impaired 
  • You don't have to raise your voice to a person who is blind. Unless its your kid or spouse.
  • People who are blind don't have super sonic hearing, they may listen better.
  • Most people will get where they are going with out you grabbing the arm and pulling. You can always ask if the person needs assistance. However before asking, make sure you understand the what the words "No Thank You" mean.
  • Tho shall not pet the dog. If you sat your laptop computer on a table in a restaurant, would you what someone playing with it. Service animals are equipment, not cute pets.
  • Tho shall not feed the dog. Would you let strangers give you kid a treat. Or how do you feel when a friend gives the kid a snack just before a mealtime.
  • That is not a stick or even a white stick. It is called a cane.
  • You must have four legs and a harness, to guide a person from your shoulder. It is proper to offer your elbow.
  • People who are blind also buy color TVs and cars. This is for you salespeople.
  • There are blind parents, that are doing just fine. And yes some even have sighted children.
  • Its O.K. to ask "Did you see the news last night ?" The person knows what you meant.
  • There is a difference in blind and legally blind. A person in the US is concerned legally blind if peripheral vision is less than 20 percent or worse than 20/200.
  • Some people who are legally blind can drive a car safely.
  • Some people with low vision see better in low light, while others in bright.
Deaf 
  • Yelling will not help the person hear.
  • Speaking slow makes it harder to read lips
  • Not all people who are deaf, read lips.
Chair users 
  • Did you know that the person in the chair probably has more experience driving it than you.
  • If you are too weak to stand, you might want to ask permission before leaning on someone chair.
  • Have you ever had someone park so close to your car, you couldn't get the door open. Don't Park in the handicap parking spaces alley way. Many lifts require six to eight feet.
Simple tips

General 

  • Speak to the person, if you have something to say or ask. Many a waitress will, "Would he like some coffee?
Blind  
  • Always let a person who is blind know that you have stepped in the room.
  • Waitress - Mention that you are going to refill the coffee cup. Don't just grab it.
  • Chair If you are going to have a long conversion with a person using a chair have a seat your self. Don't be a pain in the neck.
  • Put things back from where they came from. Just like your mother told you.
  • Put your chair back under the table/desk. Another thing your mother told you.
  • Don't place objects on the edge of counters, and tables.
Deaf 
  • If the person doesn't understand what you said repeat once. If still unable re-phrase the statement.
